10 rules for hikers For your safety please note the following:
1. Self-assessment Before every mountain tour check your physical suitability, evaluate your stamina and that of your companions - especially children - realistically. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are often very important!
2. Planning and preparation Plan every proposed mountain tour beforehand very carefully. Walking maps and guides, as well as information from alpine clubs and locals such as mountain guides and alpine hut owners can be of vital assistance.
3. Equipment On the mountain you require appropriate equipment and clothing, particularly sturdy boots with grip. Protective clothing is essential as the weather can often change unexpectedly.
4. Information to others For reasons of safety, particularly in the event of an emergency, inform others of your route and destination - write in the hut guest books, tell your accommodation owners and friends - if need be also the expected time of return.
5. Take it easy Pace yourself according to your physical fitness and that of your companions. Walking too quickly will tire you out easily and you should consider that you have to manage the return route too.
6. Don't leave the marked path Walking on steep, grassy slopes - especially when there are wet - and on steep snow fields and glaciers is always very difficult and dangerous.
7. Don't loosen rockDon't loosen rock, as other hikers could be endangered. Places where there is danger of rockfall should be traversed as quickly and carefully as possible.
8. Turn back in good time There's no disgrace in turning back in good time, but a precaution. Sometimes necessary when the weather changes, fog falls or the path is too difficult or not good.
9. Keep calm in the event of an accident! Try to attract help by calling, waving large items of clothing etc. An injured person should remain as visible as possible at the place of accident.
10. Keep the mountains clean Keep the mountains clean and take your litter with you back down the valley. Please do your bit to keep the mountains clean so that others can enjoy their majestic variety and beauty too.
If you take all these points to heart, you are sure to enjoy an unforgettable experience in the Dachstein Tauern Region!
